Deputy Police Chief Paul F Campbell

October 16, 1941 — April 2, 2018

Retired Worcester Police Deputy Chief, Paul F. Campbell, 76 of Worcester passed away at home Monday, April 2nd with those he loved gathered at his side after a long fought battle with cancer.  Paul was born and raised in Worcester, one of four children of Henry F. and Marion B. (McGrath) Campbell.  He graduated from St. John’s High School, in Worcester. He then served for a time in the U.S. Army Reserve and earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Westfield State College.  Paul furthered his education over the years by attending classes at Babson and Anna Maria.   On April 28, 1968, Paul was appointed to the Worcester Police Department as a patrolman, over the next 38 years, Paul ascended the ranks to Deputy Chief before he retired.   During his notable police career, Paul lived and loved all aspects of his police work.  Willing to accept tasks whenever and whatever his superiors or anyone requested, loved and respected by the patrolmen under each of his commands.  Paul had a willingness to get things done and loved the police department. When he retired, the department created the Water Carrier Award, an annual award inspired by Paul’s career and service to the department and City. After a reluctant retirement due to age limits, Paul was not satisfied to just sit; he then became Head of Security for Worcester Academy for the next six years.    He is survived by his devoted wife and love of 50 years, Beverly (Maynard) Campbell; his three children, Sara A. Pedone and her husband Michael of Worcester, Sean M. Campbell and his wife Kate of North Attleboro, Marybeth Campbell and her partner Adriana Fagan of Worcester; a brother David W. Campbell and his wife Marie of Longs, S. Carolina; a sister, Judy A. Whalen and her husband Joseph of Chelmsford; three grandchildren that were the love and inspiration of Paul’s life, Brendan, Jack, and Zachary; Nieces, nephews and extended family and many friends.   Besides his parents, a sister, Anne Campbell passed away as an infant.    Paul was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and also regularly attended St. John’s Church.  He was a member and board of director of the Worcester Police Federal Credit union, a member of the Police Supervisors Union, Worcester Police Department Golf League, relief association and Massachusetts Police Association.   He was also a devoted family man, actively involved in his children’s activities when they were young and carried over to his grandchildren where he never missed a sporting event or activity.   In all his years Paul found great enjoyment as a voracious reader, an avid bird and weather watcher, soaking up sun at Hampton Beach in the summer, and tending to his very green yard.   Friends and relatives are invited to calling hours Thursday, April 5th from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St.   His celebration of life funeral mass will be held Friday, April 6th at 11:00 am in St. John’s Church, 40 Temple St. (Please go directly to church).  Burial will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery.   In lieu of flowers memorial remembrances in his name can be made to Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation at 383 Main Ave 5th floor, Norwalk CT 06851 or VNA Hospice and Palliative Care at VNA Care, Fund Development, 199 Rosewood Drive, Suite 180, Danvers, MA 01923 or via www.vnacare.org.   The Campbell family would like to thank Dr. David Shepro, the nurses, and staff of the St. Vincent Hospital Cancer and Wellness Center, and VNA Care Hospice for the care, compassion and comfort they gave to Paul during a long and difficult period.
