Marie Ruth Noella Bates

December 26, 1937 — December 21, 2017

Marie Ruth Noella (Bourdelais) Bates passed away in St. Vincent Hospital at exactly 1 PM on Thursday December 21st surrounded by all her sons and other family members at the age of “80”. Her major goal these last two and a half years has been to live to the age of eighty, and considering she fell short by only 4 days and 11 hours, we have given her the benefit of the doubt, rounded up, and called it 80. Noella, as she was called by her family, was born in Marlborough, Massachusetts on December 26, 1937 to George A. and Bertha M. (Lindsay) Bourdelais. She lived in Shrewsbury with her husband before moving to Worcester to raise her family. She was an avid bowler for many years and enjoyed art, music, playing bingo and card games with family and recently her new friends at Webster Manor Nursing home where she lived the past two and a half years. Noella leaves her sons: Wayne and his partner Steve Marshall of Boylston; Michael and his wife Patricia (McLean) of Holden; Garry and his wife Tanya (Masiello) of Oxford; Kenneth and his wife Kathleen (Foley) of Worcester; and Robert and his wife Kristie (Gentile) of Shrewsbury. She was predeceased by her husband Earle F. “Sonny” Bates in 2002 and her son James who passed away 5 years ago this week, both of whom she missed terribly. She also leaves 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was excited when she learned this week of the coming arrival of her third in 2018. She is also survived by her brother Roger Bourdelais and his wife Helen of Liverpool, NY; a sister Yvette and her husband Cesare Pietrangelo of Waltham; and her brother David and his wife Urai of Marlborough. She was predeceased by beloved sisters Jeanne, Georgette and Pierrette, her brother Paul, and many nieces and nephews. Her family would like to thank all the saints who’ve worked with her recently including Katrina, Susan, Sue, Joyce, Dr. Kep Kep, Shannon, Ellie, Bob, Brad, Greg, Lucy and so many others at Webster Manor. We also must thank Monique Modig and Michelle Gover among others in the CP-ICU unit at St. Vincent Hospital whose hands Noella had the good fortune to be in several times in the last two years. And finally, we must thank Christine Anderson who used to work in Dr. Kevin Martin’s office. She was a crutch our mother could count on and she helped our mother tremendously over the last 15 years.   Burial will be private at a later date. The family requests no donations be made anywhere but ask that you instead share a meal or special occasion with a friend or family member.
