Worcester’s own Walter Swett Jr., one of the worlds’ original men, evacuated this terrestrial plane on Nov the 28th 2017. Son of Walter and Mary Ann (Campbell), Wally was born on October the 8th 1949. The oldest of three boys, Wally held a protective love of his younger siblings Richard (Kathi) and David (Alice). In spite of the unique physical limitations Wally was born with, he proved to be a highly astute and keenly intellectual young man. After graduating with honors from South High, Wally attended Assumption College where he earned his bachelors in Social Education. Determined to apply his hard earned knowledge to the betterment of others, Wally went on to the prestigious NorthEastern University where he was awarded a Master’s in Education. Even though Wally would have loved to proceed in his educational journey towards his Doctorate, he chose instead to focus his time and energy on his proudest achievement, his daughters Amy (Devlin) and Carrie. In the midst of his career, Wally happily took on the role of Mr. Mom. Once the girls were old enough, Wally went back to work at Worcester City Hospital where he counselled addicts and worked with those with disabilities. Wally was considered an excellent counselor and teacher by his friends and colleagues. Known for his unique presentation in which he incorporated his own disability with his various theories of rehabilitation. Upon returning to Assumption College, Professor Swett quickly became a favorite amongst students and staff. In addition to academic achievements, Wally was a pioneer in the burgeoning disabled person’s rights movement. Working closely with State Reps and local officials, Wally was a natural spokesman for the challenges that people with disabilities face. In 1999, Wally found new love with his Lady, LeeAnn Majercik with whom he traveled the world visiting Florence, Edinburgh, Paris, Venice and other exotic cities. Back home in Worcester Wally spent as much time as he could with his beloved grandchildren Jack and Roxy Devlin. Wally loved chauffeuring the kids to football games and dance practices while always challenging their minds with books and conversation. A lifelong bibliophile and lover of music and film, Wally was found where he fell, among his books and CDs. It was a freak accident that took him in the end. An unexpected end to a man who lived a life far more full of love and accomplishments than ever could have been expected. Friends are invited to visit with Wally’s family also including his nieces, nephews, cousins and aunts on Monday, December 4, 2017 from 4-7 pm with his Celebration of Life Service to begin immediately at 7 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St., Worcester. Burial will be held privately. The family asks that those who wish to commemorate his passing with flowers, instead contribute to www.youcaring.com/Swett
