Anthony V. Tony” Simmarano, 87 of Worcester, an accomplished Chef and local entertainer known in the family as “Uncle Nonni”passed away peacefully Saturday, October 21, 2017. Anthony was born and raised in Worcester, by Italian immigrant parents Michael and Libra (DeMichele) Simmarano. After high school he joined the U.S. Army during the Korean War serving his country proudly. Upon his discharge; “Tony” accepted a position as a cook with the Westboro State Hospital, rising through the ranks over the next 40 years to the position of Head Chef before retiring. Tony, also performed as a singer and musician performing at night spots in New England and beyond with Dee & Simms and Simms & Mardo, in the company of many A-list stars, including Danny Thomas, Dean Martin, and Rocky Marciano among others. Tony attended the Berkley School of Music where he enrolled in voice lessons to better his skills. His favorite performance was imitating Dean Martin where he looked and sounded just like him. Tony was a member of the Eastside Post 201 American Legion, a life member of the Columbus Civic Association and the Entertainer’s Union Guild. He enjoyed entertaining, fishing, the New England Patriots, being with family and friends and most of all making homemade wine with his father, brother and nephews. At One time, Tony was a semi professional boxer competing under the name “Tony Simms”. He was a simple quiet man who wanted never to bother anyone, or impose. He provided guidance and laughter to anyone who needed a lift. His presence in the St Francis Home was widely known and loved. He could be seen daily entertaining the residents with music, songs, stories or just being company. Uncle Nonni will be sorely missed. He is survived by his daughter, Andrea L. Gault and her husband Gerald of Rutland; three grandchildren, David, Dennis and Ashley Gault; 15 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; nieces, Libra “Libby” Tomaiolo and her husband Gerald, Marilyn Gatti and her husband John; nephews, Michael Nardella and his wife Angela, Michael Simmarano and his wife Linda, Anthony Nardella and his wife Lyn; other extended family members and friends. His son Mark, fiancé Pauline “Polly” Skogg, brother, Vincent Simmarano and sister Mary Nardella all pre deceased him. Friends and relatives are invited to calling hours Thursday, October 26th from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. A funeral service will be held Friday, October 27th at 11:00 am in the funeral home. Burial will be in St John Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in his name can be made to the Eastside Post 201, American Legion 326 Plantation St. 01604 or Vets Inc., 60 Grove Street Worcester. The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the wonderful staff at Saint Francis Nursing Home in Worcester. Their loving and compassionate care for Tony gave his family peace of mind. Their kindness will always be remembered.
