William G. Bennett, 84 of Worcester died peacefully on Monday July 17, 2017 in the UMASS Memorial Hospital surrounded by loved ones. His wife Claire L. (Bourque) Bennett died May 13, 2015. William is survived by his loving children. A son Mark W. and his wife Debra of Shrewsbury, a daughter Donna L. McAuliffe and her husband James of Sutton, a sister Irene Gibbons of Dedham. William was the proud grandfather to five grandchildren, Greg, Ryan, Kate, Ben, and Jaclyn, and seven great grandchildren. He also leaves several nephews and nieces. William was predeceased by two brothers, Edgar and Larry, and four sisters, Gloria, Barbara, June, and Marion. William was born in Worcester son of the late Edgar and Irene (Flynn) Bennett and has lived in Worcester all his life. He was a graduate of Worcester Boys Trade School. William worked as a Forklift operator at the New England Grocers Company for over twenty years before he retired. William attended the Church of St Stephen, and was a long time member of the Pope John XX111 Council Knights of Columbus. He was a longtime member of the Local #170 Teamsters Union. William liked watching sports,especially football, and loved playing cards and cribbage. He really enjoyed a good day at the Casino!! However his most treasured times were those spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and friends.. He will truly be missed by his family and friends. William's family would like to thank the staff at the Whitney Place and Beaumont of Northbridge for all the kindness and compassion they showed to William, Claire and his family over the past few years. It is truly appreciated! William’s funeral will be held on Friday from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL 370 Plantation St with a Mass of Christian burial at 10:30AM in the Church of Our Lady of Loreto 33 Massasoit Rd. Calling hours in the funeral home will be from 4PM to 7PM on Thursday. Entombment with his wife will be in St. John’s Cemetery Mausoleum.
