Joan M. (McGurn) Genese, 82 of Worcester, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 24, 2017 in the comfort of her home with her family by her side. Joan was born in Worcester, daughter to the late Walter E. and Florence C. (Mallett) McGurn. She was a student at St. Stephen’s School and Sacred Heart High School . Joan worked many years in the deli department at Price Chopper in Shrewsbury. She was a faithful and longtime member of Our Lady of Loreto Church. Joan enjoyed watching her soap operas, shopping with her sister Maureen, going to Twin River Casino with her brother Tommy, Sunday dinners with her friend, Evie Ferraro and her daily scratch tickets. Her greatest enjoyment in life was her grandchildren and her great granddaughter. Joan always attended dance recitals, competitions, sports games or anything her grandchildren were involved with. Joan’s husband of 33 years, Joseph J. Genese, Sr. passed away in 1990. She is survived by two sons, Joseph J. Genese, Jr. and his wife Patricia and Brian K. Genese and his wife Tina; two daughters, Lee Ann Nuzzetti and her husband Arnold and Maria Simpson and her husband Michael all of Worcester; nine beloved grandchildren, Matthew Fox and his wife Kristine, Timothy Fox and his girlfriend Jessica Guillotte, Cara Rogers and her husband Thomas, Brianna Nuzzetti, Michael, Kayla and Alexa Genese, Ashley Simpson and Alyssa Genese; one great granddaughter, Mckenzy Rogers; four brothers, Thomas McGurn , Kevin McGurn and Steven McGurn of Worcester, and Walter McGurn of Pennsylvania,; two sisters, Maureen Slevin of Worcester and Darlene McGurn-Delmore of California; many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her daughter, Carolyn and her son in law Kevin Fox; a brother, Francis McGurn; two sisters, Patricia Baril and Kathy Frykberg. She also leaves one special sister in law, Rose Cline of Worcester Joan’s family would like to express their deepest gratitude to all the Staff at St. Vincent’s Cancer and Wellness Center especially Dr. Ahmad Siddiqui and nurses, Shelley, Lisa, Tanya and Anna for the outstanding care and compassion given to Joan. She truly did love you. Services for Joan will be held on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St., Worcester with a Mass at 10 am in Our Lady of Loreto Church, 37 Massasoit Rd, Worcester. Burial will follow at Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. A period of calling hours will be held on Tuesday, June 27th from 5-8 pm in the funeral home.
