John E Smith

July 29, 1955 — January 15, 2017

John E. Smith, 61, of Shrewsbury, passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2017, at UMass Hospital in Worcester.   John is survived by his loving family, including his best friend and wife of thirty-six years, Lee E. (Batchelder) Smith; two daughters, Kali Pisano and her husband Vincent of Millbury, and Megan Smith and Joshua Johnson of Warren, Rhode Island; his mother, Joan (Riordan) Smith of Westwood; his mother-in-law Maureen Batchelder of Shrewsbury; four sisters, whom he was known by as Jack, Susan Smith of Natick, Linda Walter of Westwood, Nancy Noble of Steamboat Springs, CO, and Susan Hildreth of Australia; his beloved dog, Rory; many nieces and nephews.  He was born in Denver, Colorado, and was son of the late, Robert Smith.  John was raised in Westwood, and graduated from Westwood High School, later serving his nation honorably in the United States Army.   John worked as carpenter for his whole life, proudly ending his career with the Carpenters Union, Local 107.  He loved to be with his family and was youth soccer coach while his daughters were playing.  He was a member of the Vincent F. Picard Northborough American Legion Post 234.   John’s family is planning a Memorial Celebration on Thursday, January 19th from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at The Italian American Victory Club, 26 Dewey Road in Shrewsbury.   Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, Worcester, is assisting John’s family with arrangements.
