Luz Pompeya (Matos Perez) Calcano, 86 of Worcester, formerly of New York City, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family after a period of declining health.Pompeya was born on January 25, 1930 in Barahona, Dominican Republic a daughter of the late Francisco Demostenes & Romelia (Perez) Matos. Pompeya was raised in Dominican Republic where she went to school and met her husband Ramon Antonio Calcano. Together they immigrated to New York City in 1973, where she lived until she moved to Worcester in 2012.Pompeya was a member of the Worcester Spanish Seventh Day Adventist Church and she regularly attended services there. Pompeya was a devote Christian who lived every day according to her unwavering faith, which was reflected by the way she loved everyone. She was truly a selfless person, who put others first at all times and never expected anything in return. Pompeya was especially known for her care for the sick and she raised her children to care for others in the same way. True to her Dominican heritage Pompeya was an amazing cook and she loved to bring joy to people by feeding them her delicious meals. She also enjoyed sewing and working on arts and crafts. Pompeya will be dearly missed by all who were fortunate enough to have been in her company.Among her many survivors Pompeya leaves behind her two sons, Salvador Peguero and his wife Daniela of Argentina and Joshua Calcano and his wife Elisabel of Worcester; two daughters Ivelisse Amador and her husband Felipe of Worcester and Kaisa Acosta and her husband Alcibiades of West Boylston; Grandchildren Jessica, Jonathan, Jael, Ariel, Angie, Arvin, Alice, Alessia, Kayla, Alesska, Josiel, Liz, Lisbeth; and Great-Grandchildren Jonathan Jr, Kaya, Christian, Jordan, Isabella, Aryanna, Camila, Cesar, and Nicolas. Pompeya was predeceased by her husband, Ramon Antonio Calcano; her father Francisco D. Matos; her mother, Romelia Perez; her grandson, Adrian, and five brothers and three sisters.Friends and relatives are invited to Pompeya’s Funeral on Friday, January 20, 2017 at 11:00 AM at WORCESTER SPANISH SEVENTH DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH, 886 Main St. Worcester, MA 01609. A funeral cortege will process from the church to Saint John’s Cemetery, 260 Cambridge St, Worcester, MA 01603 for Pompeya’s burial following the Funeral Service. A period of visitation will be held the evening prior on Thursday, January 19, 2017 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. Worcester, MA 01605 followed by a prayer service at the funeral home at 7:00 PM. Refreshments will follow the burial service at Worcester Spanish Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
