Barry E. Carmel, 71 of Worcester passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at Beaumont Rehabilitation, after a period of declining health. Barry was born on October 1, 1945 in Worcester, a son of the late Albert and Marguerite (Hosmer) Carmel. Barry attended Worcester Academy and went on to proudly serve his nation in the United States Marine Corp during the Vietnam War from 1963 until 1967. During his service time Barry received several commendations including a Purple Heart and being a Former Marine was a badge that Barry wore proudly for his entire life. As a true “Good to Go Marine” Barry was a regular face at the Worcester YMCA where he exercised and stayed in shape; he also enjoyed studying history and collecting war memorabilia. Barry was a numbers man and Math aficionado, he worked as an accountant at WPI where he was in charge of the accounting department before he retired and he was in the process of self-teaching himself trigonometry in his spare time. Barry was also an avid market watcher and stock trader; he was very successful buying and selling his own stocks through his personal trading accounts. Barry was a lifelong diehard Red Sox fanatic and he enjoyed watching them win their three World Series in recent years. Barry was a kind person and was liked by those that knew him. Among his survivors Barry leaves behind a son; James A. Carmel; two daughters, Carole M. Carmel and Cheryl M. Smart all of Oxford and five grandchildren Richard J. Carmel of Spencer, Sullivan J. Smart, Alanna M. Smart, Shayla B. Smart, and Michael P. Davis, Jr. all of Oxford.
