Vincent L. Gentile, Sr. passed away unexpectedly at the age of 94, Friday July 8, 2016 surrounded by family. Vincent was born in Worcester, a son of Alfonso and Alice (DeFalco) Gentile. He graduated from Commerce High School, joined the U.S. Army serving his country proudly in the South Pacific, taking part in the battles of Luzon and New Guinea. Upon his return to Worcester he married the love of his life for the next 65 years, Mary B. Santora and worked for a time with area construction companies. In the early 50’s Vincent accepted an opportunity to work for the City of Worcester DPW; 30 years later he retired as superintendent in 1984. Vincent also along with his son Vincent owned and operated Gentile Line Striping for more than 60 years. Vincent’s wife Mary passed away in 2011. A son Mark passed away in 2000. He is survived by two sons, Edward Gentile of Dennisport, Vincent L. Gentile Jr. and his wife Caryn whom he considered a daughter of Worcester; A brother Anthony Gentile of Shrewsbury; three grandchildren, Nicholas, Matthew, and Vincent whom he adored; Close friends Rose Mary Kempton and Ronald Valentine; Nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Besides his wife and son, two brothers, Edward Gentile who was killed in action in World War II and Francis Gentile also predeceased him. Vincent was a member of Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church, the Eastside Post 201 American Legion and the former UNICO Club of Worcester. A proud, hardworking and humble man who dedicated his life to his family. His most endearing qualities were his generosity and love for his family. Friends and relatives are invited to calling hours, Monday, July 11th from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. His funeral will be celebrated Tuesday July 12th from the funeral home with a procession to Our Lady of Loreto Church, 33 Massasoit Rd where his celebration of life Mass will be held at 10:00 am. Entombment with Military honors next to his wife and son will follow in Notre Dame Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers memorial remembrances in his name can be made to the American Legion Eastside Post 201, 326 Plantation St. 01604. Members of the Eastside Post 201 will meet Monday, July 11th at 6:30 pm in the funeral home to conduct their ritual.
