Josephine “Peppy” (Abasciano) Losapio, 92, of Shrewsbury passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving and devoted family, on Sunday, May 22, 2016 in the Rose Monahan Hospice Home in Worcester. Her loving husband of sixty-four years, Mauro “Tut” Losapio, predeceased her on November 26, 2008. Josephine is survived by her loving daughter Barbara M. Fitzgerald and her husband Patrick of Worcester; one brother, Frank Abasciano of Worcester; two grandchildren, Jason Fitzgerald and his wife Rachel Zack of New York City and Kelly and her husband Craig Wencis of Northborough; three great grandchildren, Jordan and Jacob Wencis and Lillian Fitzgerald, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, AnnMarie Harman; five brothers, Anthony, Nicholas, Manuel, Gaetano “Neno” and Maurice Abasciano; three sisters, Lucy Vuona, Mary Covotta and Julia Abasciano. Josephine was born in Shrewsbury, daughter of Mauro and Maria (Papagni) Abasciano and has lived in Marlborough for most of her life, before moving to Southgate in Shrewsbury. She was an excellent cook and baker, and baked hundreds of Italian cookies for her family and friends. Family gatherings were a very important part of her life. She enjoyed dancing and bowling with her Southgate friends. Josephine always enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s baseball games or any activities that they were involved with. She was always there to give a helping hand and support to anyone who needed her. Josephine was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to all, and will be dearly missed. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the entire staff at the Hampton Suites assisted living at Southgate for their tireless efforts in caring for Josephine over the past year and a half, and to the staff and volunteers at the Rose Monahan Hospice Home for their loving care and support. The funeral for Josephine will be held Wednesday, May 25, 2016 from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester with a Mass celebrated at 10 a.m. in Saint Anne Church, 130 Boston Tpke., Shrewsbury. Interment will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, May 24th from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. in the funeral home.
