Michael John Sanderson

Michael John Sanderson, 61, of Worcester, born September 24, 1954 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, passed away suddenly on April 24, 2016.  Michael leaves his longtime partner Heather W. Sims of Auburn, his mother Beryl, his brother Christopher with partner Jackie, and many good friends.   Michael was a tenured professor and medical researcher in the Microbiology and Physiological Systems department at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester.  He earned his BSc and PhD from the University of Southampton and followed these with post doctorate positions in New York and Los Angeles. Ever active, Michael was an avid runner, with a personal best half marathon time of 1:57, at the age of 57.  He enjoyed sailing, windsurfing, hiking, travelling, photography, cooking, wine and beer. A service to celebrate Mike’s life will be held on Sunday May 1st at 12:00 at the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester, MA, with viewing hours between 10:00 and 12:00. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
