Helen Ruth Kouri, 90, of Shrewsbury passed away peacefully at home on Friday, January 15th 2016, with her loving sister, Edith, at her bedside. Helen was born in Worcester, one of two daughters of Assad and Victoria (Abisamra) Kouri. Highly intelligent, Helen earned her associate’s degree from Quinsigamond Community College and furthered her education at Clark University, graduating summa cum laude. Helen worked as an underwriter for the former Paul Revere Insurance Company, now Unum Provident, before retiring. She later volunteered her time at Holy Trinity Nursing & Rehabilitation Center and the Beechwood Hotel Gift Shop. Helen is survived by her beloved sister and best friend, Edith M. Nachajko, with whom she lived. She also shared a special bond with Dr. Charles A. Birbara and the late Dr. Philip J. Birbara, whom she considered more like brothers than cousins. She was a beautiful person who enjoyed the simple pleasures of life--traveling, reading, special family days, and just being with Edith. As Helen wished, her burial was private. A CELEBRATION of Helen’s life will be held Saturday, February 6th at 11:00 a.m. in the City Hospital Chapel at the Beechwood Hotel, 363 Plantation Street. Remembrances in Helen’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice. The MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street is honored to be assisting the family with arrangements. Helen’s family would like to express their deep gratitude for the compassionate care provided by Catherine Gittao, Veronica Maina, Jane Ball and Maria Bigelow during a difficult time.
