Elmer J. Smith, Sr.

Elmer J. Smith, Sr, 57, of Oakham, passed away on Friday, December 25, 2015, at UMass Hospital, after falling ill at home.Elmer is survived by his loving companion of twenty-four years, Stella Fortune; a son Elmer J. Smith, Jr. of Oakham, and daughter Justina Humphrey of Hood River, Oregon; Stella's children, Dana A. Stoddard and his wife Jennifer of Barre, and Janet Fortune of North Brookfield; two brothers, Warren J. Smith and Tracy T. Smith, both of Worcester; a sister, Loretta K. Smith of Monroe, CT; a grandson, Elmer J. Smith IV; ” PopPop” to Emma and Martin Stoddard of Barre; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Carol J. Dennison. Elmer was born in Richfield Springs, New York, son of the late Elmer J. and Elsie (McPherson) Smith. He lived many years in Connecticut, graduating from Warren Harding High School in Bridgeport, CT. Elmer served his nation proudly in the United States Army. Upon his return from the service he resided in Worcester, before settling in Oakham, twenty-two years ago.Elmer was well known in the electrical distribution circles in and around Worcester, having held various positions in several companies, most recently as Branch Manager for Electrical Wholesalers. He had previously worked for many years at Northeast Electrical Distributors and Benjamin Electric. He was a hard-working man, both at work and at home; he was always doing or fixing something. He loved his family and made sure to work hard to provide for them. He loved sports of any kind and was a voracious Jets, Nicks, and Mets fan. Calling Hours for Elmer will be held on Friday, January 1, 2016, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. in MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester. His Funeral will be held on Saturday, January 2, at 10 a.m. in the funeral home. Interment will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.
