Marilyn A. “Mazie” Dowd, 61, of Ashland MA unexpectedly passed away in her sleep Tuesday, December 15th 2015. Mazie was born in Worcester, one of four daughters of the late, Elias “Leo” and Gladys N. (Zakaib) Dowd. She graduated from Doherty Memorial High school, and earned her undergraduate degree in music from Wheaton College class of 1976 and her Master’s degree in music education from North Michigan University. Marilyn then returned home and began a career in teaching in the Dover-Sherborn School district where she taught for 30 years before retiring this spring. Marilyn leaves behind three sisters: Christine M. Michael and her husband John of Huntersville North Carolina, Elaine A. Bartolini and her husband Bruce of Ashland, and Maryann Dowd of Quincy; three nieces, Dr. Stephanie Michael, DPM, Dr. Barbara Michael MD , and Bethany Bartolini; a nephew, John Andrew Michael; extended family members and a host of friends. From a young age, Mazie’s interest and talent in music and the arts was evident. Her angelic voice was a God given gift that was cherished by all. Mazie performed in plays, bands and was a choir director. She dedicated her life to passing on her love of music to her students who were dear to her and her to them. One of her life’s missions was to helping others in need. Marilyn was very involved in Al-Anon, a group that helps individuals overcome addiction. She fed the homeless and visited the incarcerated. Other interests included stained glass crafts and the Native American culture. Marilyn was a member of The Massachusetts Teachers Association and the National Education Association. Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours Friday, December 18th from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. Her funeral service will be held Saturday, December 19th at 9:30 AM at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery.
