Matteo A Bisceglia

July 22, 1923 — December 4, 2015

Matteo A. Bisceglia, 92, of Worcester a former Worcester Police Sergeant, passed away with his family gathered at his bedside Friday, December 4th 2015.     Matteo one of seven children of Fabio and Maria (Silvestri) Bisceglia was born on July 22, 1923 in West Boylston.  Matt grew up in Worcester, graduated from Commerce High.  In 1943, Matt joined the U.S. Army during WW II, serving proudly in the Signal Corps.   Upon his return from the service in 1946, Matt met and in 1948, married Marie Fresolo in Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church.   Together they began a 66 years marriage of love and devotion raising their family until Marie passed away on February 7th of 2014.    Matteo served the citizens of the City of Worcester over 25 years as a Police Officer retiring as a sergeant in 1974.    Matt is survived by his five children, Matteo Bisceglia, Jr. of CT and Joseph Bisceglia of Worcester; Susan Marie Bisceglia, with whom he lived, Barbara Liberis of Worcester and AnnMarie Peterson and her husband Benjamin of West Boylston; a daughter in law, Beth Bisceglia of Worcester; a sister, Lucy Acquino of Worcester; ten grandchildren; six great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.  Matt was predeceased by three brothers, John, Leo and Michael Bisceglia and two sisters, Nell Paladino, and Madeline Riccardi all pre deceased him.    Matt enjoyed many years of retirement, having retired from the Worcester Police Department. He loved hearing other people's life stories; every kind of socializing with people was a favorite pastime of his.  He loved to walk and into his late 80’s would walk more than 5 miles a day.  Some of his favorite hobbies included playing handball and watching boxing. He loved gardening which he took pride in. His greatest joy was his family; he was the happiest when surrounded by them.  Matt will be sadly missed by many.  Matt was a member of Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church,  the International brotherhood of Police officers local 911, Worcester Police Relief and Credit union, the Eastside Post 201 American legion, and Greendale YMCA.    Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family during calling hours, Tuesday, December 8th from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St.   His funeral service will be held Wednesday, December 9th from the funeral home with a procession to Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church, 24 Mulberry St where his Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am.  Burial with U.S. Army Military honors will follow with his dear wife Marie in St John’s Cemetery.
