Carl E. Schaeffer, 86, of Worcester passed away with the love of his life Eleanor by his side on Tuesday, August 18th 2015. Carl was born December 10, 1928 in Newton, graduated from Westborough High School; He joined the Navy during the latter part of World War II to service his country. Upon his discharge from the service Carl continued his education at Worcester Junior College, earning his degree. He began working as a Pharmacy Technician for the former Vernon Drug Company, later accepting a position as a Software engineer for Digital Equipment Corporation, moving to Hewlett Packard Corporation when the two companies merged before retiring after many years of service. Carl married the "love of his life" Eleanor Marsello, on June 16th 1972 at the U.S. Naval Base in Bainbridge MD and for the next 43 years enjoyed their life together with travel to England, around the United States and cruises to Bermuda. Carl is survived by his wife Eleanor; several nieces, nephews, brother and sister in laws and friends. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church. A life member, two term Past Commander, service officer, member of the Honor Guard and active volunteer of the Vernon Hill Post 435, American Legion in Worcester. He was also a life member of the Worcester, Chapter #4 of the Disabled American Veterans. He also at onetime was an avid golfer. Friends and relatives are invited to calling hours, Friday, August 21st from 4 pm to 7 pm in the MERCADANTE FUINERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. His funeral will be held Saturday, August 22nd from the funeral home with a procession to Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 1260 Grafton St where Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am. Naval Military Honors will follow and burial in St John Cemetery will be private. Members of the Vernon Hill Post 435 will meet at 6 pm Friday night in the funeral home to conduct their ritual.
