Leonard M. Cariglia

Leonard M. Cariglia, 88, of Worcester, passed away, peacefully, on Saturday, July 4, 2015, in his home. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty one years, Elizabeth (Cancelmo) Cariglia; a son, Lenny Cariglia and his wife Denise of Worcester; three daughters, Maria Cariglia and her partner Scott St. Onge, and Gina Cariglia, all of Worcester, and Michelina Fraioli and her husband John of Sutton; two brothers, Martin Cariglia of Worcester, and Dante Cariglia of Auburn; a sister, Michelina "Lela" D'Angelo of Worcester; six grandchildren, Anthony Fraioli, Domenic Cariglia, Mia Cariglia, Natale Fraioli, Nicholas Cariglia, and Mariella Peto; many nieces and nephews. Len was born in Worcester, son of the late, Martino and Michelina (Tomaiolo) Cariglia, and has lived here all his life. Leonard was a World War II Veteran, joining the U.S. Navy on April 18, 1944, his 17th birthday. He saw service in the North Atlantic, Europe, and North Pacific. His last tour of duty was in the Aleutian Islands, on Attu and Adak. He was honorably discharged on June 6, 1946. Leonard retired from The Commonwealth of Massachusetts, having worked for many years in the maintenance department for the Massachusetts State Police in the Holden Barracks. He also worked as a bartender, at Leo's Restaurant for many years. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, the American Legion, Post 201 and the Italian American Veterans Post 3. Leonard adored his wife and his family, and although he was a tireless worker, he enjoyed the times he spent with his family, especially his loving grandchildren. Calling Hours for Leonard will be held on Tuesday morning, July 7, from 8:30 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. in MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester, followed by a procession to Our Lady of Mount Carmel-Saint Ann Church, 24 Mulberry Street, Worcester, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Restoration Fund at Our Lady of Mount Carmel-Saint Ann, 24 Mulberry Street, Worcester, MA 01604.
