Virginia A. (Sage) Mattero, 88, of Shrewsbury died peacefully Thursday June 25, 2015 at UMASS Memorial Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was predeceased by her husband, John J. Mattero who died in 1999. Virginia leaves her three children; John P. Mattero and his long time companion Ann Marie Mancini of Foxborough, Gary S. Mattero and his wife Sophia of Shrewsbury, and Gina Mattero and her Fiance' Nathan of Shrewsbury. She also leaves her caring nieces; Sandy Flibbert, Joan Swenson, Judy Martello,extended family members, Mark, Karen, and Dan Tremblay, Marie Gengarelli, Dickie and Rosaria Gengarelli of Naples, Italy, Anthony Mattero, Chris Betti, and many other relatives and friends .Virginia will also be missed terribly by her canine friend Shayne. She was predeceased by two sisters, Stella Gengarelli, and Ann Martell, and two brothers, Anthony Sage, and George Sage. Virginia was born in Worcester, daughter of the late Stephen and Rachel (Elausheti) Sage of Hardwick, Ma. and lived in Shrewsbury most of her life. Virginia worked at the UMASS Medical Center Food and Nutrition Department for twenty years before she retired. Previous to that she worked in the family business, Mattero's Bakery for many years. She was a talented cake decorator, especially wedding cakes. She was a long time member of the Church of St. Anne in Shrewsbury. Virginia was a hard worker, and had a zest for life and was always a very sociable person. She enjoyed watching the Red Sox, cooking, baking, going to the beach and a good day at the Casino! However her most treasured times were those spent with her family. A time of visitation with the family will be held on Monday June 29 from 9:00AM-11:00AM at the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL 370 Plantation St. , followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11:30AM in the Church of St. Anne, 130 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury.Interment with her husband will be in Mountain View Cemetery.
