James J. Covello , 96, of Worcester, passed away peacefully on April 22, after a short illness. He was born on June 5, 1918 in Worcester. James was the son of the late Angelo P. and Annunziata (Straface) Covello , both from Italy. He lived most of his life on Grafton Hill. He attended Worcester Boys Trade School and served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He leaves his devoted, loving wife of 66 years, Florence B. (Broderick) Covello. He also leaves his son James J. Covello Jr., wife Alys and two grandsons: Christopher James and Shawn Michael Covello and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Joseph J. and half brother Henry Covello, sisters Mary D. Huard, Rose M. Morocco, Antonetta H. Covello, half sister Anna Genese, and nephew Michael Covello. Shortly after leaving the service, Jim worked as a cook at Lou Roc's Diner. He then worked as a manager for many years at McGovern's Package Stores. He worked at Superior Sprinkler as an installer until he retired. Jim loved following Boston sports, especially the Boston Celtics and attended many Celtics games with his son and wife at the old Boston Garden. He loved fishing on Cape Cod with childhood buddies, overnights with his grandsons watching wrestling and working in his garden. In his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with friends at Tex's garage on Hamilton Street. Driving until he was 92, he and his wife looked forward to going on daily adventures. A family event could not begin until "Uncle Jim" arrived. He was always fun to be with, and the life of the party. Jim always hoped to strike it big in the lottery but his biggest reward was his family. Jim was a wonderful, funny and loving man whose most cherished times were in the company of his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.
