Edward L. Johnston, 88, of Worcester, passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2015, in Worcester Health Center. He is survived by his loving wife of forty-four years, Loreen (Morgan) Johnston. Edward is also survived by his dear family, three daughters, Sandra Johnston, Charleen Johnston, and Pearl Morgan; a sister, Pauline Pharr of New York; seven grandchildren; twenty-six great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Montez Johnston, as well as three brothers and two sisters, Sidney Johnston, Ethel Johnston, Wilbur Johnston, Betty Johnston-Deyette, and Charles Johnston. He was born in Worcester, son of the late, Sidney W. and Elva G. (Coburn) Johnston, and has lived here most of his life. He graduated from Worcester Commerce High School in 1946, and later from Virginia Tech, where he was a stand-out football player. Edward served his nation proudly in the United States Army Air Corp. Edward worked as a security guard at the former Worcester City Hospital. He remained active and athletic for many years, not only did he play football but he as a boxing enthusiast. He gave boxing lessons at the Great Brook Valley Youth Center. He was known in the boxing ring as "Baby Tiger Flowers", when he was boxing in the 1940's. Calling Hours will be held on Wednesday morning, March 18, from 9:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. followed by a Funeral Service at 11 a.m. in MERCADATNE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester. Interment with Military Funeral Honors will follow in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Winchendon.
