James S."Jimmy"Potenti,63,of Worcester died peacefully Tuesday January 6,2015 at home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 42 Years of marriage and soul mate of 50 years Dianne M. (Fontaine) Potenti, his three sons; Marc Potenti of Athol, Joel "Jay" Potenti and Scot "Scotti" Potenti both of Worcester. Jimmy also leaves his brothers Johnny and Richard Potenti of Worcester and two sisters Janice Mahoney of Florida and MaryAnn Bujnowski of Holden. He was the doting grandfather to Anthony, Alyssa and Gina Potenti, and Zach White. Jimmy also leaves his uncle, Freddie Potenti and many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by a son Shawn Potenti, and a brother Robert "Bobby" Potenti, and his long time canine companion Kila. James was born in Worcester son of the late John and Marion (Saunders) Potenti and lived here all his life. He was a graduate of Doherty Memorial High School, and then went on to receive his Bachelor's Degree in Psychology. He was a United States Air Force Veteran. Jimmy worked for over 32 years for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a Contract Officer before he retired. Jimmy was a long time member of the Church of Our Lady of Loreto, and the Pope John XX111 Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the American Legion Post 273 in Madera Florida also. He loved his canine buddies Tasha and Carlos ,and enjoyed playing cards and bowling. He recently purchased a home in Florida and was so excited about spending time there with Dianne and his family. He really enjoyed going to Florida. However his most treasured times were those spent with his family especially the grandchildren. He was a quiet and peaceful man who will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Jimmy fought a brave, strong, and positive battle throughout this journey and couldn't have done it without the help of Dr. Vijay Kasturi and Dr. Jennifer Reidy, and the entire Nursing and Hospice Staff at the UMASS Medical Center. Their kindness and compassion will always be remembered. Jame's funeral will be held on Saturday January 10, from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL 370 Plantation st. with a Mass of Christian burial at 11:00AM in the Church of Our Lady of Loreto 37 Massasoit Rd. Calling hours will be held on Friday(tonight) from 4PM to 7PM in the funeral home. Burial will be private. members of the Pope John Council will meet at 6:30 to perform their Ritual.
