Joseph Zona, III, 49, of Beverly formerly of Holden and Worcester passed away unexpectedly Thursday December 18th 2014. Joey was born in Framingham on March 20th 1965 a son of Joseph Zona Jr. and Darlene Senecal. He grew up in Worcester, and graduated from North High School. Joey then enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving his country a number of years both on active duty and in the reserves. He then accepted a position as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Worcester where he worked for 19 years before retiring. Joey is survived by his wife, Jennifer A. Humphrey-Zona; his two sons, Tanner J. Zona of Worcester and Fletcher E. Zona of Holden; his father and stepmother Joseph Zona, Jr and Joeann (Prest) Zona of Charlton; his mother Darlene (Senecal) Malfa of Northbridge; a brother, Glen Zona and his fiancé Cole Ethier of Worcester; His sister, Jammie Lussier and her husband Paul of Charlton; his step grandfather, Francis Prest of Worcester and his beloved pets Chewy and Peppa; Nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Joey's special love was sailing. Nothing made him happier than being on the ocean with the wind on his back aboard the sailboat he owned named "The Walrus", which he loved so much, in past years he actually lived aboard it in the summer. Joe found great peace and tranquility enjoying sailing whenever he could. He enjoyed woodworking, especially building boats including his first sailboat, "the Valca" He also enjoyed hiking, and all things outdoors. Friends and relatives are invited to calling hours and funeral service, Monday, December 22nd from 4 pm to 7 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. Followed by a prayer service. In lieu of flowers memorial donations made be made to help people learn the love of sailing, to the Sail Salem Community Bowling center, care of Waterfront Headquarters, 50 Winter Island Road, Salem, MA 01970, www.sailsalem.com or the Cystic fibrosis foundation of Massachusetts, 20 N Main St # 104, Natick, MA. There will be a graveside celebration at a later date in Beverly.
