SHREWSBURY, MA - C. David Welsh, prior resident of Mystic, Connecticut, Korean War Veteran, Engineer and Mathematician died on November 16, 2014. David was born on August 13, 1929 in El Paso, Texas, the son of the late Sara and Edward C. Welsh. He grew up in Monroe, Louisiana. David served in the United States Coast Guard during the Korean War and attended the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. During his years at the Academy, he cruised extensively on the USCGC Eagle. David was a graduate of Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana with degrees in mechanical engineering and mathematics. He joined the Electric Boat division of General Dynamics in Groton, Connecticut. David left General Dynamics to work for Sperry UNIVAC, which built one of first mainframe computers. David designed mainframe computer systems and was inducted into the Sperry UNIVAC Hall of Fame. He later transferred to McLean, Virginia to work for Unisys Federal Systems Division on the Star Wars Project. His hobbies included mountain climbing, fly-fishing and sailing. David was president and an active member of Trout Unlimited in Groton, Connecticut. One of his favorite passions was woodworking, especially designing furniture for family. He was always ready to a play game of cribbage. David is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Margaret , his four daughters; Kerri Kelly and her husband Kevin Kelly of Centerbrook, CT; Kathleen Callahan and her husband Kevin Callahan of Hingham, MA; Kristie McGonigle and her husband Robert McGonigle of Milford, CT; Karolyn Busconi and her husband Dr. Brian Busconi of Hopkinton, MA; six grandchildren, David Kelly, Catherine Kelly, Kelly Callahan, Liam Busconi, Aidan Busconi and Amelia McGonigle. A funeral mass for David will be celebrated a Friday, November 21st at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 640 Main St. in Shrewsbury, MA, followed by his burial with Coast Guard honors at River Bend Cemetery in Westerly, Rhode Island. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of C. David Welsh to the "Schwarzschild Lab" (Parkinson's Research) at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
