Alfred J. Cove, Jr. 70, of Ashburnham, former longtime Sterling resident passed away at home, with his beloved family gathered by his side, Saturday October 25th 2014. Alfred was born in Worcester, one of thirteen children of Alfred J. Cove, Sr and Mary E. (Pendergast) Cove. He was educated in Worcester, met and in 1964, married the women who would become his dear wife for the next 50 years; Sandra M. (Scampini) Cove. Together in 1968, they settled in Sterling where they lived happily, raising their three children until moving to Ashburnham 5 years ago. Alfred owned and operated Al's Canteen Catering for many years, enjoying a laugh and good conversation with customers at work sites and businesses he delivered to before retiring. After retirement Alfred worked for Fortune Transport. Besides his wife Sandra; Alfred is survived by the family he loved so much, Sandra M. Bahre and her husband Richard with whom he lived, Barbara A. Guillotte and her husband Andrew of Rutland, Alfred J. Cove III and his wife Sandra A. of West Boylston; three grandchildren; Katrina, Michael and Ryan; two brothers, John J. Cove of Leicester, and Robert A. Cove of Worcester; three sisters, Ann Walsh of Sterling, Barbara Brady of Charlton and Margaret Renihan of Worcester; Many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. A grandson Matthew Nelson; Two brothers, Richard A. and James Cove, as well as five sisters, Mary Waterhouse, Patricia Rockwood, Helen Zachariewicz, Shirley Wheeler, and Kathleen Murphy all pre deceased him. Alfred was a founding member of St Richard of Chichester Church. He enjoyed walking his dogs, Bingo, the occasional trip to the casinos and yearly cruises with his wife. Alfred also enjoyed all the time he spent on the boat on the lake and talking on the back deck with his family and friends. He was a family man first and foremost. His most enjoyable times were those spent with his wife, children, & grandchildren. They were what were most important to him. Friends and relatives are invited to calling hours Tuesday, October 28th from 4pm to 8 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St., Worcester, Ma. His funeral will be celebrated Wednesday October 29th from the funeral home at 10:00 am with a procession to St Richard of Chichester Church, 4 Bridge St., Sterling, Ma., where his Mass will be held at 11:00 am.
