Helen (Ustinovich) Maykel, 91, of Worcester, passed away Thursday, October 16, 2014 at Rose Monahan Hospice Home in Worcester, embraced by her loving family. Born in Worcester on May 4, 1923, Helen was the daughter of Luka and Julia Ustinovich. She graduated from Commerce High School and Worcester City Hospital School of Nursing. She was the Night Supervisor at Worcester City Hospitaland also a member of its Alumnae and a Board member of the Worcester City Hospital AID Society. Helen was a charter member and president of both the local and state dental society alliances. She married her husband of 47 years, Dr. William G. Maykel, of Worcester, on June 5, 1949. Dr. Maykel passed away in 1996. Helen leaves six children, Dr. Linda A. Maykel of Dudley, MA, Elaine M. Manneh and her husband the Very Reverend Father George Manneh of Anaheim, CA, Dr. William M. Maykel of Paxton, MA, Diane E. Norcross and her husband Kevin Norcross of Newnan, GA, Mitchel M. Maykel of Auburn, MA, and Michele A. Maykel and her husband Joseph W. Dick of Yarmouthport, MA. She also leaves 7 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, along with two brothers, Alex Hustin and his wife Edith, of Deltona, FL, Chaplain Raymond Hustin and his wife Mae of Falmouth, MA, and a sister, Sue Pignataro, of Worcester, MA. Helen was a registered investment and securities representative, and a member of the St. George's Orthodox Cathedral Women's Organization. She and her husband Bill had a wide circle of friends and enjoyed golfing at Pleasant Valley Country Club, Holden Hills and Cummaquid Golf Club in Yarmouth Port, as well as summers on Cape Cod. Helen was admired by many for her meticulous head-to-toe matching outfits and accessories, and was nicknamed "Chanelen" by a family friend. Wherever she went, she would easily strike up a conversation and make others feel warm, welcome and appreciated. She was also known for knitting beautiful scarves and baby blankets for others. On her 90th birthday, she received a key to the city of Worcester from Mayor Joseph Petty. Her children and family are especially grateful for the lessons and values which she taught and lived, including always extending extraordinary generosity and kindness to others. Helen always believed in looking for the good in people, and with her husband, kept her family close together. She and Bill also inspired many of their children and grandchildren to carry on their work of helping others, as healthcare professionals, dentists, nurses and chiropractors and teachers. Family and friends will honor and remember Helen's life by gathering for calling hours at MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester on Monday, October 20 from 6 PM to 8 PM. Calling hours will also take place on Tuesday morning, October 21, from 9 to 10 AM, to be followed by a funeral service at 10 Am in the funeral home. Burial will follow at Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials and donations in Helen's name may be made to Rose Monahan Hospice Home, 10 Judith Road, Worcester, MA 01602, where Helen received tender loving care.
