George Wood, of Grafton, passed away on Sunday, August 3, 2014, in his home, surrounded by his family. George was born in Worcester on May 25, 1922; the son of Gabriel and Mary (Jollit) Wood. George is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Madeline (Attar) Wood; their son, Ken Wood and his wife Judy and granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Wood, all of Eliot, Maine; many nephews and nieces. He was pre-deceased by his sisters, Freda Abysahl and Rose Corey and brothers, Mitchell, Alex and Dr. William Wood. He was a founder and President of Floorcrafters, Inc. for over 40 years, retiring in 1990. He was a WWII veteran serving in the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) from 1942 to 1946. He was a proud member of St. George Orthodox Cathedral, its Parish Council and also served as a treasurer and member of the Men's Club from 1980 until 2013. He was a past member and 32-Degree Mason, Scottish Rite, of the Franklin Lodge, a member of the Master Home Builders and a volunteer at the New England Ecotarium. George and Madeline travelled extensively throughout most European countries, North Africa, China, and the Middle East. Although he always seemed skeptical when Madeline would say "We're just going to take one more trip", he always enjoyed these adventures often travelling with the same couple. They also enjoyed annual trips to El Jobean, Florida, Bar Harbor and Diamond Cove, Great Diamond Island, Maine where they made several friends. He enjoyed an occasional game of golf; he was in charge of the St. George's Annual Golf Tournament for several years and was proud to say that Ken and Judy were shareholders of Cape Neddick Country Club. George enjoyed celebrating his 90th birthday in Maine and received 90 Birthday Cards from friends and family, all arranged by his granddaughter, Sarah, who he cherished since her birth. The family also wishes to thank Dr. Richard Palken, UMass Memorial Medical Center, for providing excellent care; George was one of his first patients over 25 years ago. Services will be held on Wednesday morning, August 6, in Saint George Orthodox Cathedral, 30 Anna Street, Worcester, where Calling Hours will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. followed by a Trisagion Service and a Funeral Service at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Hope Cemetery.
