Walter A. Golubowski, 88, of Worcester, a World War II, U.S. Navy veteran, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family Friday, May 23rd 2014 after a courageous battle with lung cancer he fought to the end. Walter was born in Worcester, a son of Polish Immigrants, Anthony and Agnes (Mezailo) Golubowski. He grew up in Worcester attended Commerce High School before joining the U.S. Navy to serve his country proudly during World War II, notably as a troop landing craft coxswain taking part in several battle landings including D-Day Normandy Beach. Upon return from World War II, Walter accepted a position with Worcester Wire Company, later National Standard Company for many years before retiring as foreman. Walter is survived by his devoted wife and the love of his life for the past 63 years, Leona (Pilat) Golubowski; two daughters, Nancy L. Golubowski, Wendy A. Wolanski and her husband Daniel all of Worcester; three granddaughters, Amanda., Alisha , and Arianna Wolanski; Many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Three sisters, Sophie Chalecki, Helen Mostek and Olga Litunik all pre deceased him. Walter was a member of Our Lady of Czestochowa Church. An avid gardener, he loved to tinker with his yard and garden. Walter was very much a family man. He devoted his life to his wife, children and grandchildren. They were what gave him the greatest joy and inspiration. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, May 27th from 4 pm to 7 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. His funeral will be held Wednesday, May 28th from the funeral home with a Mass at 10:30am in Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, 34 Ward St. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery.
