Alan G. Nordberg passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, April 27, 2014. Al had been dealing with several health challenges in recent years. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Blair Hullet Nordberg and his parents, George C.F. and Elizabeth (Forsman) Nordberg. He is survived by his children, Marcus A. Nordberg of Boone's Mill, Virginia, Eric K. Nordberg of Narrows, Virginia and Shannon (Nordberg) Dye of Coral Springs, Florida as well as his baseball team' of nine grandchildren, Nicholas, Matthew, Serena, Max and Zach Nordberg and Nicholas, Joseph, Atticus and Katherine Dye. Al also leaves his sister, Lisa (Nordberg) Banks of Cary, North Carolina, his brothers Paul C. Nordberg of Auburn and John F. Nordberg of Worcester as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Al was born and raised in Worcester. He graduated from North High School in 1962, where he was president of his class and captain of the baseball team. He next attended the University of Massachusetts, where he was a member of Beta Kappa Phi fraternity, the Maroon Key honorary society and the varsity baseball team. Midway through his academic career, Al signed a contract with the Minnesota Twins and played in their system for five years. Life after baseball included a long career as a teacher in Worcester and Salem, Virginia. Al also enjoyed officiating baseball, basketball and field hockey games for many years. Al retired from teaching only to step to the other side of the classroom as an active member of and student in the W.I.S.E program at Assumption College. Al believed in and was an active practitioner of lifelong learning. Calling hours for Al will be held on Friday; May 2nd from 4 P.M. until 6 P.M. at the Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation Street, in Worcester. A brief service will be held at 6:00 P.M. Final services will be private in Virginia after which Al's earthly remains will be entombed, alongside his wife's, at Old Dominion Memorial Gardens in Roanoke, Virginia.
