John A. "Jack" Masiello, 78, longtime Shrewsbury resident and business owner passed away, Wednesday, April 9th 2014 in the University of Massachusetts Hospital after being stricken ill at home. Jack was born in Worcester, one of four sons of Frank Masiello, Sr. and Lena (Massei) Masiello. He grew up in Worcester, graduated from Commerce High School, where he was Class President of both his junior and senior class. A standout athlete in high school, Jack was captain of the Commerce High football team and was selected "All City First Team" in football. Jack was such an outstanding athlete that he received a full scholarship offer to play football for the University of Miami. Dedicated to his country, he instead enlisted in the United States Army, where he served with the Army Corp of Engineers, building pontoon bridges in Germany. Returning to Worcester, Jack attended Wentworth Institute and Worcester Junior College. He founded the Masiello Construction Company in Shrewsbury, in 1959, serving as its CEO and President to this day. Jack constructed many buildings in the area, such as, the Shrewsbury Tennis and Racquet Club, the Shrewsbury and Holden Senior Centers, the Wagner BMW Dealership, the Millbury Credit Union and several of the buildings in the former Spags Complex. On May 1st 1960, he married the women, who for the next fifty-four years, would be by his side as his best friend, partner and the "Love of his Life" Caryl A. Marrone. They began their life together in Worcester, moving to Shrewsbury, over 29 years ago. Jack is survived by his wife Caryl; their two children, John P. Masiello of Shrewsbury and Karen Masiello Beasley and her husband Robert of Voluntown CT; three grandchildren who adored grampy, Nicholas, Caroline and Katherine; Many nieces, nephews, extended family and a host friends. He was predeceased by his three brothers, Ralph P. Masiello, Sr., Frank R. Masiello, Jr. and William V. Masiello. Jack was an avid golfer and longtime member of Pleasant Valley Country Club in Sutton and the Gleneagles Country Club in Delray Beach Florida. He was an enthusiastic New England Sports Fan, enjoying the Boston Red Sox and especially the Patriots, where he was also a longtime season ticket holder. Jack loved boating as well naming his boat after his love "Caryl Anne" He was also a former member of the Worcester Lodge Sons of Italy and the UNICO Club of Worcester. A quiet well liked man, who found much enjoyment spending special moments with his wife, children and grandchildren; the times he was surrounded by them, gave him great pride and satisfaction. They were the inspiration of his life and his joy. The holidays, birthdays, summers in Marshfield and winters in Florida with family were also very special. Friends and relatives are invited to calling hours with Caryl and her family Friday, April 11th from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME and CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street. His funeral will be celebrated Saturday April 12th from the funeral home with a procession to Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church, 24 Mulberry St where his Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am. Burial with military honors will follow in Mountain View Cemetery in Shrewsbury. In lieu of flowers memorial remembrances in his name can be made to Our Lady of Mount Carmel renovation fund, 24 Mulberry St. Worcester. The Masiello offers their deepest gratitude to the many wonderful doctors, nurses and caregivers at Umass Medical Center and the Jewish Rehabilitation Center who gave such care, comfort and compassion to our beloved Jack.
