William P. Cooney, 61, formerly of Worcester passed away unexpectedly, Friday, March 14th 2014. William was born in Worcester, a son of Thomas M. and Frances G. (O'Day) Cooney and attended Doherty Memorial High School. An avid animal lover, Bill chose a career in the equine industry. Early in his career he trained at Rock Meadow Farm in Byfield, Massachusetts. As his talents grew, he extended an invitation to work with the highly respected George Morris at Hunterdon, Inc. in Pittstown, New Jersey. Under the tutelage of George, Bill became one of the top equitation trainers in the country. In the 1980's Bill left Hunterdon and opened the Beacon Hill Show Stables in Old Salem, NY with business partner Frank Madden. Over the next four decades Bill acquired numerous championships up and down the east coast. In 1984, he was named trainer of the year at Madison Square Garden after one of his students won the triple crown of equitation. Over his career Bill has earned more equitation championships than any other trainer in history. He was considered the foremost authority in the equitation world, his voice and his vision will be greatly missed. Bill is survived by; his sister, Patricia Riley and her husband Francis; sister in law, Constance Cooney; nephews and nieces, Thomas Cooney, Frederick Riley, Michael Cooney, Sean Riley, Connie Vages, Patricia and Christopher Riley. Other Extended family members and many friends around the Country. A period of calling hours will be held Monday, March 31st from 5 pm to 7 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. followed by a prayer service.
