Staff Sergeant John M. Masiello, U.S. Army Retired, 60, of Worcester passed away peacefully with his beloved wife and family by his side at home, Thursday, March 27th 2014. John began his life on October 7th 1953, in Athol. a son of the late John P. and Wanita (Boynton) Masiello, moving to Worcester as a young child. He graduated from Burncoat High School. In 1981, John met and fell in love and married, Elizabeth A. "Betty" Monopoli, Ten days later, John and Betty joined the U.S. Army, serving together in Germany. After 10 years of active duty; John and Betty returned to Worcester. John transferred to the Mass Army National Guard and settled here to raise his family with Elizabeth happily for 33 years. John remained in the Guard and Reserve as a citizen soldier, retiring as a Staff Sergeant after 23 years. He also worked full time as a mail handler with the U.S. Post Office in Shrewsbury before retiring from there in 2005 after 14 years of service. He presently was employed in the security office of M.I.T. Lexington Campus. John is survived by his wife Betty; his four children, Tina and Gina Masiello both of Worcester, SGT Michael Masiello, U.S. Army and his wife Jessica stationed in Germany , John Masiello and his wife Tina in Tennessee; three grandchildren, especially Anthony, who had a special place in John's heart; brothers, sisters, extended family and friendships. John loved the Military. He loved playing softball and basketball in the Military and his service to his country and state. He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing, talking with friends, and just being with his family. They were his life and life's inspiration. His happiest times were spent with Betty, his children and especially Anthony. He was also an avid New England Patriots fan. Friends and relatives are invited to calling hours Tuesday, April 1st from 4 pm to 7 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. His funeral will be held Wednesday, April 2nd from the funeral home with a Mass at 11:00 am in St Anne's Church, 130 Boston Turnpike Road, Shrewsbury. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Massachusetts Veterans Cemetery, in Winchendon.
