Charles A. Johnston, 93, a 32 year U.S. Postal Worker and World War II Army veteran passed away, at home surrounded by family Sunday, March 23rd 2014. Charles was born in Worcester, son of the late William J. and Emma (Schlegel) Johnston and graduated from Commerce High School. When World War II, broke out, Charles joined the U.S. Army Air Corp to serve his country as a radio operator in the European theatre. After returning to Worcester, Charles met and married Rosalina "Lena" Santos whom he would spend the next 61 years happily married. They settled in the Lake Quinsigamond neighborhood of Worcester to raise their family and have lived there all their lives. Charles accepted a position with the U.S. Postal Service as a Postal Clerk/Manager of the Westside Post Office in Worcester, later moving to the Main Post office on Summer Street as Vehicle Operations Manager before retiring in 1986 with a total of 32 years of service. Charles is survived by his devoted wife Rosalina; his children, Charles A. Johnston Jr. of Saco, Maine, Carla Ouellette and her husband Rick of Holden; a brother, David Johnston and his wife Lorraine (Rainy); two sisters, Elizabeth Balser and Ruth Boria; two grandchildren he adored, Emma and Richard; a great granddaughter Ada; Many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Two brothers, Paul and William Johnston and two sisters, Mary Bergeron and Nancy Kennedy pre-deceased him. Charles was a member of the former St Margaret Mary Church. A member of Our Lady of Loreto Church, the Greendale Retired Men's Club, the DAV Chapter #4 South Works Post and the Postal Supervisors Association. Calling hours for Charles will be held Friday, March 28th from 4 pm to 7 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. His funeral will be held Saturday, March 29th from the funeral home with a Mass at 11:00 am in Our Lady of Loreto Church, 37 Massasoit Rd. Burial with military honors will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton.
