Dominic P. D'Ambrosio ("Dimo"), 80, of Worcester unexpectedly passed away in his sleep, Saturday, March 1st 2014 in his home. Dimo, a kind hearted friend to all who would help anyone who asked, was born in Worcester, son of Italian immigrants Nicholas and Julia (DeFeudis) D'Ambrosio. A standout baseball and football athlete, Dimo graduated from Commerce High playing both sports. He then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, returning home and living in Worcester. Dedicated to his Italian heritage and Catholic faith, Dimo was a member of the former St Margaret Mary Parish and presently St Anne's Parish in Shrewsbury where he could be found at daily mass. He made several overseas religious pilgrimages to Holy Shrines of the Blessed Virgin. Dimo formerly worked for the Penn Central Railroad and Conrail . He loved coaching youth sports. He coached at Jack Barry Little League, Tom Ash Babe Ruth and Worcester Youth Football. He also volunteered his time with the MS Society. He cherished his family: his son, Garey T. D'Ambrosio; his grandchildren, Joseph and Lilly; his sister, Virginia Schramm, his brother Nicholas D'Ambrosio; his former wife, Marey Coates. He had many nieces, nephews, and cousins whom he loved dearly. His brother, Joseph, pre-deceased him. His daughter-in-law, Zelideth D'Ambrosio passed away in 2010. Dimo, small in stature, was an avid athlete continuing after high school to play semi-pro football for the Worcester Beavers. He later played softball for Pellegrino Trucking well into his 40's. He loved golfing at Juniper Hill and Myrtle Beach. He enjoyed the sport fishing trips off the Cape. Spending time with his son and grandchildren made his life complete. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family Wednesday, March 5th from 4 pm to 6 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. His funeral will be held Thursday, March 6th from the funeral home with a Mass at 10:00 am in St Anne's Church, 130 Boston Turnpike Road. Entombment will follow in Notre Dame Mausoleum.
