Pura (Cardona) Ruiz, 87 of Worcester, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 27, 2014 in Christopher House surrounded by her loving family. Pura's husband of fifty-three years, Ismael Ruiz, Sr. passed away on April 13, 2006. She is survived by two sons, Ismael Ruiz, Jr. and his wife Donna of West Springfield and Adalberto Ruiz and his wife Karen of Worcester; two daughters, Migdalia Elmi and her husband Ahmed of Holden and Carmen Rosa Ruiz of Orlando, FL; a brother, Lucas Pou; two sisters, Marina Osorio and Julia Pou all of Puerto Rico; twelve grandchildren, four great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by two brothers, Mario Cardona and Luis Roman; a sister, Genoveva Pagan. Pura was born in Humacao, Puerto Rico, a daughter of the late Juan and Evangelina (Lozada) Cardona. She graduated from high school in Puerto Rico and later moved to New York where she lived for many years. She has lived in Worcester since 1969. Pura worked as a seamstress for the John David Company for over ten years before she retired in 1985. Pura was a member of St. Paul's Cathedral where she was an active member in the Choir. Pura was an avid sports fan who loved the Boston Red Sox and attending family softball games. She enjoyed singing and was a fantastic cook. The family wishes to thank the staff at Christopher House for their care and support. Services for Pura will be held on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St., Worcester with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Cathedral, 15 Chatham St., Worcester. Burial will be held at a later date at Pax-Christie Cemetery in Humacao, P.R. A period of calling hours will be held on Monday, March 3rd from 4-7 p.m. in the funeral home.
