Joseph Mezzano, Sr., 97 of Worcester was stricken ill and passed away in the arms of his son January 30st 2014 while vacationing in Florida. Joseph was born in Worcester, one of seven children of Italian immigrants Salvatore and Concetta (Musiello) Mezzano. He grew up in Worcester, and attended Worcester Public Schools. During his youth, Joe experienced much of the vibrancy of Worcester and low points of the Country. When World War II broke out in 1941, Joe wished to join to serve his country, but was deferred; as his position in the manufacturing Industry with the Worcester Wire Works, as a machine operator was vital to the war effort. He worked for Worcester Wire, over 40 years until his retirement in 1978. In the late thirties Joe met and in 1939 married the love of his life, Helen M. Galemba. Together they settled in the Webster Square area of Worcester to raise their family, until Helen passed away in 1997. Joe continued to live in the family home to this day. Joseph is survived by his two devoted sons, Joseph Mezzano, Jr. and Ronald Mezzano and his wife Sharon both in Florida; a sister, Margaret DeVerdi of Worcester; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; Many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. A brother, Charles "Coke" Mezzano passed away this past November. Another brother, Frank Mezzano, and three sisters, Grace Nigro, Mary DiTerlizzi and Eleanor Humes-Forleo also pre deceased him. Joe was a devoted member of Our Lady of the Angels Church and a member of the United Steelworkers Union. He had a passion for Golf; a member of Green Hill Golf Club but could also be found on any course he could play. Joe loved to cook, a good meal and especially traveling to Florida to be with his son Joseph Jr. Friends and relatives are invited to calling hours Thursday, February 6th from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. His funeral will be celebrated Friday, February 7th from the funeral home with a procession to Our Lady of the Angel's Church, 1222 Main St. where his Mass will be held at 10:00 am. Burial next to his wife will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of the Angel's Church, 1222 Main St Worcester.
