Joseph R. Laverty, Jr., 64, of Port Orange, Florida and Worcester, a retired postal worker, passed away on Saturday, December 28, 2013, surrounded by loving family. Joseph is survived by his children, a daughter, Megan L. Laverty; two sons, Kevin J. Laverty and Ryan M. Laverty; his darling granddaughter, Caelan A. Laverty; his loving and adoring sister, Mary Lou Bousquet; his former wife and friend, Debra B. (Richardson) Laverty, all of Worcester; many nieces and nephews. He was born in Worcester, son of the late Joseph and Grace H. (Henchey) Laverty. He graduated from Saint Stephen's High School and later served his nation proudly in the United States Marine Corps, during the Vietnam War. Joseph returned from the war and began working at the new UMass Medical School and Hospital in Worcester. He later went to work for the United States Postal Service and was a mail handler in the new postal distribution center in Shrewsbury; he retired in 2009, after more than twenty-five years of dedicated service. He was a member of the VFW in Port Orange and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He loved sports of all kinds, especially when he coached the teams his kids played on. He looked forward to Sunday football, playing golf and loved vacationing on Martha's Vineyard. Joseph loved to be with his family and adored his granddaughter immensely. Calling hours for Joseph will held on Monday, December 30, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. in MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester. His Funeral will be on Tuesday, December 31, from the funeral home, with at Mass at 10:30 a.m. in Saint Stephen's Church, 357 Grafton Street, Worcester. Interment, with Military Honors, will follow in Saint John's Cemetery, Worcester.
