Charles P. Damato, 99 of Worcester passed away peacefully November 28, 2013 at home with his loving family gathered around him. Charles affectionately known by all as "Charlie" was born on February 12, 1914 in Jersey City, New Jersey son of the late Samuel and Antoinette (Lapempa) Damato and was the oldest son of eight children, He was a Sergeant in the Army and WWII veteran who served in campaigns in France and Italy. His wife of 64 years Yolanda (Perro) Damato died on February 26, 2012. Charles is survived by his three sons; Charles "Chuck" Damato of Worcester, Dennis Damato and his wife Annmarie Sangiovanni - Damato of Shrewsbury and Glen Damato of Shrewsbury. Four Grandchildren, Anthony, Chuckie, Jenna and Marielle who loved him dearly.He also leaves a brother William Damato of Grafton and sisters, Antoinette (Damato) Scola of Worcester and Nancy (Damato) Rossi. His personal caregiver and friend, Debbie Gleason, who provided great care and comfort to him. Two brothers, Peter and Samuel Damato and two sisters, Laura Damato and Mary (Damato) Germaine pre deceased him. In his earlier days, Charlie worked in the leather industry at Graton & Knight and later Hudson Belting & Company. He repaired drive belting for the machinery industry relied on throughout the east coast. He later owned, operated and served as head Chef for Damato's Eatery and Coal Miners Pub, both on Millbury Street in Worcester. Charlie loved puttering around the house, and was a great cook. His most treasured times were those spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends. Charlie's funeral will be held Wednesday December 4, from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL 370 Plantation St. with a Mass of Christian burial at 11:30AM in the Church of St. John, 40 Temple St. Calling hours will be held from 9:00AM to 10:45AM Wednesday morning only, prior to the procession to Church. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery with his wife. The family would like to thank the staff at the Knollwood Nursing Center for their kindness and care of Charlie, and also the Summit Elder Care.
