Edwin C. Metcalf, 88, of Worcester, a retired Worcester Police Lieutenant, passed away peacefully surrounded by the ones he laughed with, lived for, and loved, on Saturday, November 16, 2013. Ed was born on December 27, 1924 in Worcester. He was preceded in death by his father Wilson J. Metcalf and his mother Ellie (Mann). He was the youngest and the last surviving of ten siblings. He graduated from Worcester Boys Trade. After high school he joined the United Sates Army, and served his nation during World War II, in the Pacific Theatre. He later became a Communication Specialist Sergeant. He attended the University of Hawaii, where he studied Japanese language and culture. Mr. Metcalf was in the first wave of American Troops to enter Japan after the signing of the peace treaty and was stationed in Osaka Japan for two years. He attended several Army criminal investigation schools. He worked as a criminal investigator in the United States Army for 32 years, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer 4. Ed attended Quinsigamond Community College, Assumption College and Babson College in Wellesley. Mr. Metcalf worked for the Worcester Police Department for 40 years, retiring as a Lieutenant in 1989. He belonged to many organizations, including the Military Officers Association of America, Massachusetts Police Association, Worcester Police Relief Association , Worcester County Retired Police and Firefighters Association. He was a lifetime member of the Worcester Lodge of Elks and the Retired Men's Club of Greendale with whom he and his wife enjoyed many wonderful trips. Lt. Metcalf also received recognition for being a 40 year player and founder of the Worcester Police Golf League. Ed enjoyed traveling extensively throughout the U.S. with his wife Terri. He enjoyed spending time with the family, especially during the holiday seasons at their second home at the Cape. Ed was a loving, caring man and was a devoted friend, partner and husband to his wife of 63 years, Terese A. (Tanona) Metcalft; their his three daughters, Karen E. Manduke, Susan J. Bauman and Debra J Ruggiere and her husband James all of Worcester; his four grandchildren, Megan Higgins, Matthew Bauman, Nicholas Manduke and Scott Bauman , who from early childhood all call him "Bumpa". He had a great sense of humor, always had a story tell and will be missed by all. Family, friends, and others whose lives Ed touched are invited to MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 19 2013. His funeral service will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 20th at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Notre Dame Mausoleum in Worcester.
