Robert A. Giumentaro, a 49 year resident of Shrewsbury passed away Tuesday, November 12th after a period of declining health. Robert's wife of 48 years Margaret G. "Grace" (Chaisson) Giumentaro passed away on September 11th of 2012. His Stepson, Michael D. Russell passed away in January of 2010; Robert is survived by his three brothers, Cosmo Giumentaro and his wife Jenny of Worcester, Louis Giumentaro and his wife Norma L. of Shrewsbury and Raymond Giumentaro and his wife Joanne of Shrewsbury; a sister, Norma J. Blanchard who lives in Auburn; Many nieces and nephews, including., extended family and friends. Robert was born in Worcester, a son of Italian Immigrants Joseph and Maria (D'Amato) Giumentaro. He grew up in the Italian neighborhood around Shrewsbury Street of Worcester. Graduated from Commerce High School and joined the U.S. Navy to serve his country towards the end of World War II. In 1964, Robert moved to Shrewsbury where he has lived ever since. Robert worked construction all his life for the laborers union, mostly for the ETL Corporation before retiring. He was a member of Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church. The Laborers International Union Worcester Local, the Post 3, Italian American War Veterans, and the Eastside Improvement Club. Robert treasured his Italian Heritage and everything Italian. He loved working in his garden, his yard and meeting with his friends on Shrewsbury Street at the Italian men's club routinely and coffee with brothers daily at the Greendale Mall. Family was always important, holidays and special gatherings were most important. His nieces, and nephews he treated as his children and no party was ever begun without Uncle Bob being there. Memorial services will be held Saturday, November 23rd at 11:00 am in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. Burial next to his wife will follow in Mt View Cemetery. A period of calling hours will be held from 10 am to 11 am prior to the service at the funeral home.
