Danato "Al" Lanava, of Worcester passed away peacefully Saturday, October 26th 2013, after a period of declining health. He was 90 years of age. Al was born in Worcester, one of twelve children of Italian immigrants, Santo and Vincenza (Gremma) Lanava. He grew up in Worcester and graduated from Commerce High School. Al then joined the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II to serve his country. Upon returning to Worcester, Al met and married Algerd "Al" Lamanuzzi who became his dear and devoted wife for the next 63 years. Together they settled in the Lake View section of Worcester to raise their family and have lived there ever since. Al worked for the City of Worcester, in the Street Department for over 38 years before retiring. He then worked part time for the National Amusement Company. Al is survived by his wife Algerd "Al"; two sons, Anthony Lanava and his wife Karen of Auburn, Santo Lanava and his wife Pamela of Worcester; a grandson whom he cherished, Matthew Lanava and his wife Kimberly of Dudley; a sister, Anna Walsh; Many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Five, Anthony, Joseph and Thomas, Michael and Francis Lanava and five sisters, Mary Lanava, Lucy Lanava, Madeline "Millie" Morelli, Angie Lucciarone and Lena Lanava all pre deceased him. Al was a member of the former St Margaret Mary church, and it's men's club; the Eastside Post 201, American Legion, the Greendale retired men's club and the Mass State County and Municipal employees union. Al was a devoted family man who cherished his wife, children, grandson and friends. He loved his garden in the backyard, traveling, summers on the beaches of Rhode Island and especially spending time with his family. He was also an avid New England Sports fan, especially the Red Sox and Patriots Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family Monday, October 28th from 5 pm to 7 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. His funeral will be held Tuesday, October 29th from the funeral home with a procession to Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church, 24 Mulberry St where his Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am. Burial with Military honors will follow in St John's Cemetery.
