Marino V. "Marty" Palermo

February 17, 1925 — August 31, 2013

Marino "Marty" Palermo, 88, of Worcester died peacefully Saturday August 31, 2013 in the Lutheran Home. His beloved wife Yolanda (Pedone) Palermo died in 1999. Marino leaves his devoted children; his daughter, Emelia "Amy" Tomaiolo and her husband Leonard of Shrewsbury, sons, George Palermo and his wife Sally Ann of Millbury, Frank Palermo and his wife Annmarie of Worcester, and his daughter in law Jane Palermo of Sutton. Marty also was the doting grandfather to Marty, Nicole, Marty, Ann, Anthony, Alison, Katie, Vincent and Frank. Marty also leaves four great grandchildren; Ava, Vivianna, Skylar, Melrose, and two more great grandchildren arriving shortly! And several nephews and nieces. Marino was predeceased by his son Vincent Palermo of Sutton, a brother Vincent Palermo who was killed in action during WW11, and a sister Anna Cipro and her husband Henry who died in June 2013. Marino was born in Worcester son of the late George and Emelia (DeMango) Palermo and lived here all his life. He served in the United States Army during WW11 and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Marty along with his wife, sister and brother in law was a co owner and founder of the Saveway Market on Burncoat Street for many years before the store closed.Marty then went to work as a Butcher for the Fairway Beef Company where he worked for many years and made numerous friends before he retired. Marino was a long time member of the Church of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel-St Ann. He was also a member of East Side Post American Legion #201,The West Boylston VFW, and was a past Vice President of the Men's Biscegliese Society. Marty enjoyed playing cards, Bowling, and loved to go picking mushrooms. He was however known for his zest for telling stories about anything he could to capture your attention! He received an award in 1993 from the C.C.A. Breakfast Group and a Key to the City for his story telling. He loved to entertain people and make them laugh. However his most treasured times where those spent with his family especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Marty will be sadly missed by his family and host of friends! Marty's funeral will be held Thursday, September 5, from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL 370 Plantation St. with a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00AM in the Church of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel-St Ann. 24 Mulberry Street. Calling hours in the funeral home are 4:00PM to 7:00PM on Wednesday evening. Interment will be in St John's Cemetery in the family lot, with his wife Yolanda. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel-St Ann Church Renovation Fund 24 Mulberry St. Worcester, MA. 01604 or to the Summit Elder Care, 1369 Grafton St. Worcester, MA. 01604. Members of the East Side Post #201 will gather at the funeral home at 7PM to conduct their ritual.
