Dimitrios G. Tasos, 73, of Worcester passed away unexpectedly Tuesday July 16th 2013 in his home after being stricken ill. Dimitrios was born in Sideri, Greece, a son of Grigorios and Kaliopi (Fotiades) Tasos. He grew up, educated and served in the Greek Hellenic Army as a green beret in Greece. In 1970, Dimitrios immigrated to the United States. Several years later on a return to Greece to visit family, Dimitrios met and married in Greece, the women who would become his devoted wife for the next 41 years Dimitra Stefanou. Together they returned to the US settling in Worcester to raise their family. Dimitrios began to provide for his family by accepting a position in the Shoe Manufacturing Industry working for such companies as Tom McCan and Brown shoe before accepting a position in 1985, working for the Wachusetts Regional School district at Wachusett Regional High School for the next 28 years before retiring. He is survived by his wife Dimitra; his three beloved children, Peter D. Tasos, Kalliope Tasos and her longtime partner, David Sands and Grigoria Tasos all of Worcester; a brother Giorgos Tasos in Athens Greece; two grandchildren he adored Ellice and Christian; a neice and nephew; many extended family here and in Greece and a host of friends. Dimitrios was a member of St Spryidon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, a member of its men's club, the Ancient Order of Aheppa and the Greater Worcester Chapter of Enosis" Eperotic Society. He loved to travel, fish, hunt, play cards and playing Soccer as well as watching sports. In Dimitrios life, there was nothing more important, than his family; his wife, children and grandchildren meant the most to him. Having them near and during the holidays is what inspired him in life. Dimitrios held his Greek heritage and traditions close and proudly passed those traditions on to his family. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family, today, Thursday July 18th from 5 pm to 8 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. His service will be celebrated Friday, July 19th from the funeral home with a Service at 10:00 am in St Spryidon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell St. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St Spryidon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell St. Worcester 01609. A trisagion service will be held at the funeral home during calling hours.
