Joseph N Mungo

Joseph N. Mungo, 88, of Shrewsbury, a proud Naval Veteran, passed away on Sunday, June 30, 2013 in Saint Vincent Hospital. He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-two years, Rose Mungo; their six children, three sons, Anthony Nicholas Mungo of Rutland, Joseph Mungo of Princeton and Paul Mungo of Miami; three daughters, Mary Feeley and her husband Stephen of West Boylston, Catherine Rose Coston and her husband Kent of Eastford, CT and Roseann Miner and her husband Timothy of Marshfield, MA; a brother, Frank Mungo of Worcester; six grandchildren, Matthew Feeley and his wife Valerie, Meghan Townsend and her husband Sean, Michael Feeley, Brittany Lassen, Cody Lassen, and Ryan Miner, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Rose Marie Caldwell and Mary Tarallo. Joseph was born in Italy, son of the late Agazio and Maria Mungo. He was an infant when his family moved to the United States and was three years old when they settled in Worcester. The United States was his home and he served his nation proudly in the United States Navy, during World War II. He received numerous commendations including: The Presidential Unit Citation, World War ll Victory Medal, American Defense Service Medal, and Navy Occupation Service Medal, among others. He would remain in the Navy as a career sailor for the next twenty years. He spoke many times about his numerous battles including the battles of Midway and Guadalcanal. He could recount with accuracy his survival of the sinking of the USS Atlanta. Joseph retired from the Navy and then worked as a salesman for McKesson Liquor Company for nineteen years, before he retired. He and his wife were faithful members of Saint Anne's Church in Shrewsbury. He was a member of The Eastside Post 201 American Legion and was proud of his time in the Navy. He took pride in his home, enjoyed tinkering with wood, and decorating for the holidays. His greatest accomplishment was that of being a family man. He loved the special times spent with his wife and children, and the births of his grandchildren made him ever so happy. Calling Hours for Joseph will be held on Friday, July 5, from 9:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. in MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester, followed by a funeral procession to Saint Anne's Church, 120 Boston Turnpike Road (Route 9), Shrewsbury, where Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Entombment will follow in Notre Dame Mausoleum, Worcester. Flowers may be sent or donations in his memory may be made to the Guadalcanal Veterans, 815 Mimosa Lane, Reading, PA 19606.
