Dr. Carlo A. Masiello, 97, a lifelong Worcester resident and Podiatrist, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 16, 2013 at home surrounded by his loving family. DR. Masiello was born in Worcester, one of seven children born to Italian Immigrants Domenico and Josephine (Faella) Masiello. He grew up in Worcester, graduated from North High School where he was a sports standout in Baseball, football and basketball. Being recruited by many schools for his sports, Carlo chose to earn his bachelor's degree from College of the Holy Cross, his master's degree from Clark University and his doctor of Podiatric Medicine from Temple University. He completed his internship at Forest Hills General Hospital and Lowell-Freeman Clinic. Studying to become a doctor at the age of 20 he met and fell in love with a young Lithuanian girl who he married and became his devoted wife of the next 76 years, Helen C. (Karlon) Masiello. He continued to earn his license as a doctor; he worked on post graduate study in foot surgery, at Civic Hospital in Detroit. Together they returned to Worcester and settled in the Italian Section of Worcester, Shrewsbury Street to raise their family and practice medicine. He started his medical practice with an office in the Day Building in Worcester, serving of the staffs of Worcester City Hospital, St. Vincent's and later the Stratton Apartments. He later moved his practice closer to his home on the Lake Ave section of Worcester where he remained until retiring after 50 years of practice. Dr. Masiello is survived by the family he treasured, his wife of 76 years Helen; daughter, and son in law, Carole and Richard Costello; grandchildren, Carla Smith and her husband Scott, Brian Costello and his wife Amanda; five great grandchildren, Matthew and Michael Troiano, Putnam Emerson Costello, Scott and Sean Smith. Many nieces, nephews and extended family. Carlo was pre deceased by four brothers, John, Leo, Anthony, and Alfonse Masiello and two sisters, Mary Caccialino and Angelina Capuano. Carlo was a member of Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church. A charter member of the Worcester County Chiropodial Surgeons Association, and the American Foundation of Research in Podiatry. An avid boater and pilot, Dr Masiello enjoyed sailing the waters off Marshfield and Newport R.I. He continued to learn and educate himself in navigation by taking courses from the Worcester Power Squad, and celestial Navigation from the Mystic Seaport Planetarium in Conn. He later taught advanced pilot navigation at Roger Williams College. Dr Masiello's funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 19, 2013 from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St., Worcester with a Mass at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. 24 Mulberry St. Friends and relatives may visit with the family from 9:00 am to 10:30 am Wednesday morning in the funeral home prior to his Mass. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the VNA Care Hospice, 120 Thomas Street Worcester 01608 or the St Jude Children's Research Hospital, 1 Danny Thomas Way, Memphis Tenn.
