Albert J. Candela, 89 of Worcester passed away Thursday April 25th 2013 with his family by his side. Albert was born in Worcester, one of two sons of Italian Immigrants James and Lucy (Gencarelli) Candela. He grew up and was educated in the Worcester Public Schools and has lived here all his life. Albert co-owned and operated the former Candela's Market with his brother. He subsequently accepted a position as one of the first employees hired for the New University of Massachusetts Hospital food service department as food service buyer, where he designed the process by which they fed the patients and worked there many years before retiring. He notably, during the Blizzard of 1978, walked from his home to the University of Massachusetts where he remained for three days overseeing operation of the food service department. His wife of 65 years, Anna (Palermo) Candela passed away in 2011. He is survived by his two devoted sons, Dr. James Candela, and his wife Joyce of Leominster, Steven Candela and his wife Nancy of Oxford; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; Many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. His brother, Charles Candela passed away in 2006. Albert was a founding member of the Associated Grocers and Fairway Stores Association. An Avid Golfer, Albert was also a founding member of the Eastside Golf Association and could be found regularly during retirement on the links of Greenhill Golf Course. He was a 3rd degree of the Pope John Council Knights of Columbus. He loved his family, found much enjoyment with his wife, children and grandchildren. He loved to laugh and be in the company of family and friends. Funeral services and burial next to his wife in St. John Cemetery are private. There are no calling hours; Memorial contributions in Albert's name can be made to the resident activities center, care of Tricia O'Brien at Worcester Rehabilitation Center, 191 Providence St Worcester.
