Ronald R. Smith, Sr., 68, of Worcester, a retired Worcester Police Officer, passed away on Friday, February 8, 2013 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. Smitty, as he was known to close family and friends, is survived by his long-time fiancé, Rita White; two sons, Ronald R. Smith, Jr. and his wife, Jennifer of Worcester and Robert Leon Smith and his wife Holly of Chicopee; his mother, Louisa M. (Santora) Ferro of Worcester; seven grandchildren, Amanda Smith, Ryan Smith, Rebekka Smith, Robert Smith, Jr., Jason Roy, Jonathan Roy and Alexander Roy; three brothers, Ralph Ferro and his wife Laura of Spencer; Carmen Ferro of Leicester and Anthony Ferro and his wife Henri of Grand Junction, CO; many nieces and nephews. He was born in Worcester, son of the late Anthony Ferro, and has lived here all his life. He served his nation proudly in the United States Army, during the Vietnam Era. Ronald was Police Officer in Worcester, for over thirty-two years, retiring in August 2008. He was a member of American Legion Post 0462 and many other clubs affiliated with soldiers and veterans. He loved to paint and draw, and was very talented at it. He also loved hot rods, and enjoyed building models and collecting die-casts. Ronald loved his family and friends and found the greatest of life's joys were the special times surrounded by his cherished loved ones. Calling hours and Funeral Services for Ronald will be held on Monday, February 18, in MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester; with calling hours from 10 a.m. until12 Noon, followed immediately by a Prayer Service at 12 Noon.
