Nick Caro Wichita, KS - Nick Caro, (February 6, 1919, died January 18, 2013). Born Nicholas Carofaniello in Montecalvo, Italy. Mr. Caro immigrated to the United States at 8 years old and settled in Worcester, Massachusetts, with his parents, brother and sister. Two more brothers and another sister were born in the United States. Following graduation from Clark University, Mr. Caro pursued his avid interest in aviation. He earned a commission in the Navy Air Corps and served as a flight instructor during World War II, achieving the rank of Lt. Commander. His love of flying and travel continued throughout his lifetime. He traveled extensively throughout the world. In 1948, he came to Wichita to fly for Derby Oil Company. From 1951-1969, Mr. Caro owned Caro Construction Company, beginning with residential and expanding to commercial construction across Kansas and into Iowa. Following his divorce from the former Betty Taggert, he moved to Santa Rosa, California, where he has resided for the last 40 years. He earned a masters degree in history from Sonoma State University at the age of 74. Mr. Caro fathered 8 children. He is preceded in death by sister Vi, brother Mario, and daughter Dorothy. He is survived by sons David (Deonne), Michael (Nancy), and Peter (Toni); daughters Gail (Mike McConnell), Elaine, Marion (Timothy Coultis), and Jeannie (Mike Gehrer); brothers Al (Louise) and Frank (Carol); sister Marie Kozlowski; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces. It takes a unique person to live the life he lived; he will be missed. Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 22 at Downing & Lahey East Mortuary, Wichita, and 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 25, at Mercadante Funeral Home, Worcester. Burial will be in Worcester, Massachusetts. A memorial has been established with Botanica, The Wichita Gardens, 701 Amidon St., Wichita, KS 67203-3199.
