Daniel T. "Skippy" Giovannucci, 80, of 59 Evelyn Street, Worcester passed away peacefully Sunday, January 20, 2013 with his family gathered beside him. Daniel was born in the Grafton Hill section of Worcester, a son of Ferdinando and Mary (Tarallo) Giovannucci. He graduated from the original St John's High School in Worcester and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War to serve his country. Upon returning to his Grafton Hill roots, he remained there to raise his family. He also lived for several years in Shrewsbury with his daughter Mary. Daniel is survived by his daughter, Mary C. Lorion and her fiancée' Andrew Iovanni; his son, Steven Mario Giovannucci and his wife Tina of Knoxville Tennessee; three brothers, Hector Giovannucci of Northboro; Anthony Giovanucci of Worcester and Robert "Butchy" Giovannucci of Charlton; a sister, Ann Eckland of Sutton; three grandchildren, Stephanie C. Giovannucci, Madison W. and Macklin D. Lorion; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends, including his special longtime friend Peter Sena and his former son-in-law Edmond W. Lorion, III. Three brothers, Angelo, Alphonse and Ferdinando "Juny" Giovannucci Jr. and a sister, Christine Ann Giovannucci all pre deceased him. Daniel owned and operated Giovannucci Catering, and Seven Brothers Canteen Services with his brother Angelo and Skippy's Catering before retiring. Daniel had a passionate interest in aviation. He earned his pilot's license and purchased an airplane that he housed and flew from Worcester Airport whenever he could find the time. He was a great reader and particularly enjoyed his newspaper every morning. He loved debating current affairs, watching the Sopranos, horses, and the racetrack. Daniel devoted his life to his children and grandchildren. The moments he shared with and around them were precious to him and his most treasured times. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family Wednesday January 23rd from 5 pm to 8 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. His funeral service will be held Thursday at 11:00 am in the funeral home. Burial will follow at Saint John's Cemetery in Lancaster. In lieu of flowers memorial remembrances may be made to the University of Massachusetts Foundation Diabetes Fund, 333 South Street Shrewsbury, MA 01545 or the St Vincent Hospital Cardiac Care department, 123 Summer Street, Worcester, MA 01608. The family would also like to thank his in home Nurse Jessica Miller and the UMass Memorial 7th floor ICU nursing staff for the care, compassion and comfort they gave to Daniel during his time here.
