Louis P Zona

Louis P. Zona, of Worcester, a dedicated husband, brother, uncle and friend passed away Sunday, May 13th 2012 in his home surrounded by the family he loved so much. Louis is survived by his devoted wife and partner of the past 54 years, Bessie (Giro) Zona; two brothers, Mario Zona of Worcester and Richard Zona of San Clemente California; Brother and Sister in Laws, John Giro and his wife Mary in Rhode Island, Steve Giro and his wife Anita in Millbury, and Georgia Betsekas in Capitola California; Many nieces, nephews, his three godchildren, Linda DiStefano, George Betsekas, and Kristine Mohring, extended family and friends. Four brothers, Edward, Nicholas, John and Rudy Zona, and a sister Dora Basiul all pre deceased him. Louis was born in Worcester, his parents were the late Prisco and Virginia (Merola) Zona; He graduated from Worcester Boys Trade, joined the U.S. Air Force to serve his country during the Korean War stationed four years in Alaska. Upon return Lou married Bessie attended Worcester Junior College and IBM plus school of design in Rhode Island and has lived here ever since. Louis worked over 35 years for Massachusetts Electric Company, now National Grid before retiring as supervisor of stores. He was a member of St Spyridon Orthodox Cathedral, the Eastside Post 201 American Legion, Mel's Lunch Bowling League, the Columbus Civic Association, and the Green Hill Golf Club. Louis was also active in the Masons for over 50 years; He was a 32 degree member and past master of the Olive Branch Lodge in Millbury. The Scottish Rite Bodies, Swords of Bunker, and the Athelea Grotto Association. Besides his involvement in these organizations, nothing was more important than his wife and family. He enjoyed dancing with Bessie and spending time at his home in Hyannis on the Cape. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family Thursday, May 17th from 5 pm to 8 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. A trisagion service will be celebrated during calling hours in the funeral home. Members of the Eastside Post 201 will meet at 7 pm in the funeral home to conduct their ritual. Lou's funeral will be celebrated Friday from the funeral home with a Service at 10:00 am in St Spryidon Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell St. Burial with Military honors in Hope Cemetery will be Private. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the St Spryidon Cathedral Building Fund, 102 Russell St Worcester, the St Jude Children's Research Hospital 262 Danny Thomas Place Memphis, Tenn or the American Cancer Society, 350 Plantation St. The Zona family would like to thank the St Vincent Hospital Staff and the Metro west Home Care Nurses, Theresa, Ginger and Meghan for all the care, comfort and compassion they gave to Louis during a difficult time.
